Close Text Analysis

Close textual analysis is slowing down the text and breaking it down when analyzing every decision about the text or the specific scene. We as critics are analyzing exactly what is happening inside the context. Close text is the analysis of the text that dives deep into its observations.

In the beginning of the movie we see an introduction to the Englishmen that are getting ready to set off to the new world, the people of England, and their ways of thinking and living. Moving forward, the film proceeds introducing the ways of life of Indians in Jamestown: Pocahontas, her father, and the entire tribe. As the film depicts the ways of their life, the background music also is a representation of how they live. The song Steady as the beating drum, describes how Indian Americans live, “Steady as the beating drum, singing to the cedar flute seasons go, seasons come, bring the corn and bear the fruit, by the waters sweet and clean, where the mighty sturgeon lives, plant squash and reap the bean, all the earth our mother gives, oh great Spirit hear our song, help us keep the ancient ways, keep the sacred fire strong walk in balance all our days.” As this song plays in the background, we see their form of transportation, which were canoes, and men calling out with a flute to the entire tribe. Also, we see other Indian girls picking up fruit in order to take back to their family, and men fishing to eat. A religious practice practiced and taught to children near the fire by an older woman. Pocohantas’s father, Chief Powhatan, returns and is introduced by focusing on him while rising, leading to the gathering of all the tribe for his arrival. This makes him appear as the chief that he is. All the tribe is working together to survive in nature. Furthermore, a commonality all portray is their printed tribe mark on their skin.

In conclusion, all the scenes of different activities of which Indians participate, enhances the films representation of Indians. From men to women, and the chief, to all of their practices preserving ancient ways, as the song the beating drums states.

You apply the method well here, and you use the video, quotes, and description well to support your analysis. All great!

When you revisit this post, for your final paper (so not right now!), I would recommend integrating some material from the reading reports to strengthen your set-up of the method. Second, I would split the lyrics out, visually spreading them out more, line by line. And, finally, I would encourage you to come back around to a clearly stated “so what” point in the end. This will almost certainly be an adaptation of the line you have about how this shows unity, among the members of the tribe and the Earth. You have the pieces there; let’s put them together.

You’re doing really well on the posts. Keep up the great work!

I felt like you did such an amazing job with analyzing the beginning of the scene. You really did pointed out some things I myself would have surpassed. In your close text analyze I understood how you used the method and it was quite interesting how you broke it down for the readers. It definitely allowed me to see the film in a different perspective. Your conclusion was straight to the point and insightful.

    Hello Maria,

I think you did such a great job in this criticism post! As you described above, Close Text Analyses is describing everything in details and observing the situation. You describe and observe the situation from the beginning of the movie Pocahontas really well. I like how you wrote everything in details from the beginning of the movie. You even mention the song that was playing in the background, so you gave me really good picture from the beginning of the movie. Good job!
